1. HISTORY
The
Karimjee Jivanjee family came to Zanzibar more than 200 years ago from India.
We came as dhow traders and established our business in Zanzibar in 1825.
Our
trading business prospered and by 1920 we had expanded from Zanzibar into
Tanganyika. By 1950 the family was engaged in; import and export trading, sisal
and tea farming, and sales and service of motor vehicles and motorcycles.
In
1968 we acquired the agency for Toyota and in 1988 we changed the name of our
motor business from International Motor Mart to Toyota Tanzania Limited. Toyota
is today Tanzania’s favourite car.
The
Karimjee family established several charity trusts in the 1950’s before
Independence. We have built many schools, hospitals, dispensaries, mosques and
community centres. The most famous of our donations is Karimjee Hall. We built
and donated this building to the Dar es Salaam Municipal Council in 1957 as a
Town Hall. It was later adapted to become the official seat of Parliament.
Independence was declared in Karimjee Hall on 9 December 1961. The first
speaker of Parliament in 1961 was my Uncle Abdulkarim Karimjee.
Other
important donations have been the Usagara Secondary School in Tanga (formerly
Karimjee Secondary School), the Karimjee Clinic in Mnazi Moja, and the old
Karimjee Hospital in Zanzibar. At the same time Karimjee Charity trusts gave
scholarships to many Tanzanians to study overseas.
2. KARIMJEE JIVANJEE FOUNDATION
In
2009 the family consolidated the charity trusts and registered the Karimjee
Jivanjee Foundation.
There are two family Trustees. Myself Mr Hatim Karimjee and Mr Mahmood
Karimjee; and one independent Trustee Mr. Vinoo Somaiya, a prominent Auditor
& Accountant and former partner of PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
The Karimjee Jivanjee
Foundation is funded by donations from Toyota Tanzania.
We
are very honoured to support the Young Scientist Tanzania Award because we
believe that education is very important to the future development of Tanzania,
and also because science education in particular can open opportunities for
higher level career development.
I
thank you for your attention.

**********************
I am
proud and delighted to announce that this year, Toyota Tanzania celebrates its
50th anniversary as the sole and authorised Toyota distributor in
Tanzaniasince 1965.
Our
philosophy is a clear one; Deliver customer satisfaction and exceed our
customer’s expectations.
In
doing so we have had to adapt and tailor our business to cater for a rapidly
changing Tanzania and the changing needs of our clients and customers.
This
commitment has helped us maintain the position of market leader for over two
decades founded on our global heritage and reputation of manufacturing quality,
reliable and durable new vehicles built for Tanzanian road conditions.
The
legendary and iconic Toyota Landcruiser 4x4 range remains one of the toughest,
safest and reliable machines on four wheels.
Indeed the Land Cruiser Hardtop and Pickup are
an integral part of Tanzania’s fabric to this day helping to support the
economy. They are used as ambulances providing a lifeline to those in need of
urgent medical attention in rural communities as well as in our cities and
towns. They are seen protecting our wildlife and conserving our unique
ecosystems in the National Parks as well as facilitating tourism. Land Cruisers
have been safely transporting people across Tanzania, on road and off road.
Toyota Tanzania has, and will continue to provide cost effective, safe,
and reliable transport solutions to the Government of Tanzania and in doing so
create a lifeline to Government officials and Ministers travelling
across Tanzania.
In
the past decade we have expanded our automotive portfolio to include Yamaha
motorcycles, Hino trucks, Subaru, CASE IH agricultural equipment and most
recently Salute Finance Ltd (SFL) – our new full maintenance leasing company. This expansion in the
portfolio has strengthened the company`s ability to offer a wider range of
vehicle solutions to different market segments.
To
strengthen our brand we have invested heavily in our After Sales network. Each
of our customers has the right to expect a far higherstandard of Service and
Parts. Tanzania should be no
different to any other country in the world in this respect.
In the past decade we have invested in a new
Vehicle Logistics Centre, a third workshop, new high tech service bays, Body
& Paint Centre, new city centre showroom and a dealer network of 3 branches
and 14 dealerships across the country whilst exploring other regions. The latest
coup de grace will be the completion of our redesigned, modern and larger
showroom on Nyerere Road. It doesn’t stop there. In 2016, we are
planning to set up a satellite service centre in Dar es Salaam to provide more
convenient access to vehicle servicing.
Future growth will be driven
by our commitment to the development and training of our 300 employees who
are trained in Japan, South Africa, Kenya and Europe as well as at our in-house
training centers in Dar es Salaam & Mwanza. We actively develop & nurture the
talents and skills of our local Tanzanian employees.
We
send our best technicians, service advisors & parts sales personnel to
attend the global Toyota Motor Corporation National Skills Contest in Japan
each year. We send at least one Tanzanian employee each
year on Toyota Sales & Marketing courses in Japan. We support national
employees to study overseas graduate, under graduate and MBA degrees in the UK,
UAE and Malaysia.
We also conduct
driver-training courses for government department drivers covering theoretical
and practical training on driving skills, safety and maintenance. In addition, we
have an in-house training division regularly providing technical training to
our own workers and TEMESA technicians.
Investing in people is and
will continue to be an important part of Toyota Tanzania`s philosophy.
Last
but not least, as one of the
largest and most compliant taxpayers in the country we have also
understood the need for strong and proactive corporate social responsibility. Toyota
Tanzania alone and in partnership with Karimjee Foundation proudly supports a
long list of events and causes with the aim of making Tanzania a better place; This
includes Iniatives focused on Healthcare, Education, Wildlife conservation, the
Environment, Science and Technology, Arts, Sports and Road Safety.
Thank you for your attention.
