BG TANZANIA AND BRITISH COUNCIL FURTHER CAPACITY BUILDING THROUGH NATIONAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PILOT SCHEME
22 May, 2015, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania–BG Tanzania and the British Council have officially launched a pilot programme that will support postgraduate students in Tanzania wishing to pursue their studies in National Universities and Institutes of Technology. The National scholarships programme, will offer scholarships to graduates with the option of studying 15 various Masters of Science degrees courses in the relevant Higher Education Institutes.
BG Tanzania has invested USD 150,000 dollars, to provide scholars with opportunities to better their lives through education in relevant institutions of Higher learning. These include University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NMAIST), Ardhi University (AU), and Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT). The commitment to education is a reflection of BG Tanzania’s social investment strategy, which focuses on supporting the government and private sector to build capacity for young Tanzanians to benefit from the potential direct and indirect employment opportunities in the budding oil and gas sector.
This support from BG Tanzania is complemented by other existing higher education schemes such as the International Scholarships and International Graduate programmes. BG has set aside USD 800,000 this year to support the international scholarships programme in oil and gas related studies.
“In our international graduate development programme, we have recruited 9 Tanzanian graduates who are currently going through a series of skills development programmes both in Tanzania and abroad to ensure that they attain world class knowledge and skills in the oil and gas sector.”
Derek Hudson, President and General Asset Manager of BG Group East Africa, said: “Tanzania can benefit from the development of its oil and gas industry in a range of ways. One of these is through employment in the sector. BG is actively committed to making sure that we can employ as many Tanzanians as possible, and to achieve that, we need to invest in making sure they have the skills to participate. This is what our international scholarship programme with the British Council is about.”
Richard Sunderland, the British Council’s Country Director, added, ‘we are delighted to be extending our partnership with BG Tanzania to support capacity building in the oil and gas sector. This domestic scholarship bursary scheme is an excellent complement to the international post graduate scholarship scheme that we delivered in partnership with BG Tanzania and the two schemes together helps young Tanzanians build the skills they need to take an active role in the sector in future. These kinds of partnerships between oil and gas operators and educational providers such as the British Council are a fantastic way of connecting young Tanzanians with learning opportunities to help them grow and develop. We feel very proud to be part of such initiatives here in Tanzania’.
Applications for the programme are available for a range of courses relevant to the oil and gas sector at five Tanzanian Universities and Institutes of Technology; University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NMAIST), Ardhi University (AU), and Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT). Full scholarships cover academic tuition fees, research costs, direct student costs.
The Awards will be open to suitably qualified applicants for study commencing in October 2015 and will run for 18-24 months, depending on the length of the students’ respective courses.
