The UNESCO Dar es Salaam Office is conducting a 7-day training workshop for community radio practitioners on Editorial, Programming and Monitoring on Issues of Local Concern.
The training which started on Tuesday February 06 has brought together 49 community media practitioners from 24 UNESCO supported community radios.
The main objective of the training is to build capacity of community radio journalists and reporters on news formats.  The move is meant to enable them report on issues of local concern through investigative journalism, sports news reporting and monitoring the quantity and quality of news bulletins.

Participants to the training comprise of journalists and reporters as well as monitoring focal points previously trained on M&E by UNESCO.
UNESCO has localized Gender Sensitive Indicators for Community Radios to emphasize on “sex disaggregated participation list for workshops”. To put this into practice, selection of participants from community radios will adhere to gender balance aspects.
Mentorship in journalism for local public interest, in particular investigative journalism will come after the training where 72 journalists are expected to gain knowledge through peer learning.

UNESCO with the financial assistance from the Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) supports   community radios and the Community Media Network (Tanzania Development Information Organization- TADIO).
The support is meant to ensure that people in Tanzania, especially the poor, women and girls, have the capacity to make informed decision on issues that affect their daily lives.

Community radios in attendance under the SDC support with their regions in brackets are Nuru FM (Iringa), Pambazuko FM (Morogoro), Fadhila FM (Mtwara) Jamii Mtukwao FM (Mtwara), Loliondo FM (Arusha), Baloha FM (Shinyanga), Kahama FM (Shinyanga) Ileje FM (Songwe) and Tripple A FM (Arusha).  In the list are Storm FM (Geita) and Sengerema FM (Mwanza), Kwizera FM (Kagera), Dodoma FM (Dodoma) and Kitulo FM (Njombe). Others are Uvinza (Kigoma), Mpanda (Katavi), Pangani (Tanga), Boma (Kilimanjaro), Mazingira (Mara), Mtegani FM (Unguja South,) Mkoani FM (Pemba South), Micheweni FM (Pemba North)   Tumbatu FM (Unguja North), Ruangwa FM (Lindi) respectively.
The training covers 77.4% of all regions in the United Republic of Tanzania.
