Artist Spotlight
Walter Simbo Urassa (b. 1982, Tanzania) is our current Artist-in-Residence. Painting is his medium of choice, and Walter’s work depict scenes of daily life in Tanzania, exploring both the urban and the rural life.

For his upcoming exhibition Walter will be employing a combination of realist and abstract syales to explore a theme that is very close to his heart.

The exhibition will be titled Mother and Home, and will examine the role of mothers within society in both real and mythic terms. And the part that mothers play in our ideas of orgin, both in terms of the place where we come from and our place on the earth as a whole.

Walter Simbo Urassa and Nafasi Art Space are excited to invite you to theMother and Home Exhibition, opening on 11th May at 6.30

What is Dance?
For many, the answer to that question is something is like 'move rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence of steps' or to 'move in a quick and lively way.' For the Contemporary Dancer the answer is at once, both and neither, much more and much less. Contemporary Dancers are in constant state of experimentation, and exploration; it is contemporary, or modern because it is opposed to formal western dance traditions such as ballet, or waltzes.

In this way, contemporary dance is aligned to the kind of dances that were once looked down upon by these establishment, those from non-western places that were labeled dismissively as traditional and indigenous and seen to have no artistic value.

Contemporary dance both counters and defies these dismissals. It is unapologetically emotional and as preoccupied with space as it is with music (if there is any music at all). Often the search is not for transcendence (as with the gliding, clean lines of those old dances--now considered traditional themselves) but unity. A connection between performer, audience and place that is unique to the moment, rather than carefully packaged and replicated.

Thus as the reach of contemporary dance expands and enters new places so does the form itself become richer. It is a vital, expansive artform and Nafasi Art Space will is proud to present the Haba na Haba Dance Festival featuring contemporary dances from all over the region and the world
Don't miss out on the experience.

11-12th May. 7.30 pm . Nafasi Art Space.
