On Thursday, September 14: U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Brinille Ellis presents a certificate to one of the 25 graduates of the English Access Microscholarship Program that was funded by the U.S. Government. Looking on is the Director of Jomak School, Ms. Caroline Kavishe and the Principal of the School, Mr. Elimatamu Mwakilasa. The ceremony was held at Jomak School in Dar es Salaam.

Dar es Salaam, TANZANIA. On September 14, Public Affairs Officer Brinille Ellis welcomed over 100 students, parents and teachers to the JOMAK School in Bahari Beach for a graduation ceremony of the English Access Microscholarship Program. The 25 Form Three, Four and Five students began twice-weekly after-school English classes at JOMAK School in September 2015. These students are the first cohort of participants in Dar es Salaam. The U.S. Government supports three additional Access programs, a second with the JOMAK School and two in Moshi managed by Kilimanjaro Information Technology. Additional English Access Program classes will begin in January 2018, in Mwanza, Tanga and Zanzibar.
Ms. Ellis commended the Access Program students for their dedication: “Through this Access program, you have gained far more than a proficiency in English language. You’ve become community leaders and models for your community.” During the ceremony, students presented class projects in English highlighting community service projects conducted during the course of their participation in the program.
The Access Program provides a foundation of English language skills to talented 13-20 year-olds from economically disadvantaged sectors through after-school classes and intensive sessions. Access gives participants the English skills that can lead to better jobs and educational prospects. Since its inception in 2004, more than 200 students in Tanzania and 100,000 students in over 85 countries have participated in the program.
