Also, thanks to support from NMB, this year we will be building a special Children's Art Area here at Nafasi where kids will always be welcome to come learn about and practice art, as well as a permanent gallery space. We greatly appreciate donations of art supplies for children.

Welcome to our New Members!

When Nafasi was founded, it was specifically for the promotion and support of visual artists in Tanzania. Over time, Nafasi has grown and evolved, adding new programmes to the calendar, including performing arts events and workshops. Now, with support from CKU and the Danish Embassy in Tanzania, Nafasi has expanded to build 7 new studio spaces and rehearsal/meeting space, specifically meant for performing artists and arts organizations.

We received many applications during our call for new Performing Arts members last year, so it was difficult to select only seven new members, but we are excited to announce them now. Please join us in welcoming these artists and groups to the Nafasi community and look out for their great work!

UPCOMING EVENTS

Theatre: "LAMENTATIONS @ 12"
26 January 2017, 7pm at Nafasi Art Space

Rare and unique in its presentation and yet unequivocal in it’s mirroring of the moral decrepitude of man. “Lamentations @ 12”, is an emotionally and mentally aesthetic rich piece of work. Positioned through four epochs (1895 – 2015), “Lamentations @ 12”, gives us sight which makes us cringe as we journey through the eyes of innocence.

Through carefully crafted vignettes, our writer, director, actresses, technical team and choreographer bring to life, naked in rawness various epochs which society prefers to view through stormy and hazy lenses.

This one hour theatre piece is directed by Daves Guzha and features Gertrude Munhamo, Dalma Chiwereva, and Lewis Ndhlovu, of Zimbabwe.

"…a very unique one-hour presentation that is lit up by energetic folk dances and songs that give the production a rich element of cultural heritage…" (Sunday Mail, 21 August 2016)

"Munhamo takes audiences on a swinging journey of laughter and sorrow as she seeks to expose abuses that the girl child experiences in the society in different circumstances. …In addition to her writing debut, Munhamo stars in the production alongside talented Delma Chiwereva and the combination of their expertise on stage brings a complete package." (Herald – Godwin Muzari)

Workshop: Zimbabwean Dance/Drumming, Acting, and Theatre Production & Management

In the two days leading up to their presentation of the stage play "Lamentations @ 12", Daves Guzha, Gertrude Munhamo, Dalma Chiwereva, and Lewis Ndhlovu, will be offering several workshops for artists here at Nafasi. To register, please email us at info@nafasiartspace.org. You can sign up for the drumming/dance workshop, acting, or a special three hour masterclass on Theatre Production and Tour Management with Daves Guzha.

24 Jan - Drumming/Dance; Acting, 10am - 4/5pm (w/1 hour lunch break)
25 Jan - Drumming/Dance; Acting, 10am-4/5pm (w/1hour lunch break), and Producers/Tour Managers (1-4pm)

Meet our January Artists-in-Residence

In January, we are proud to host two artists in residence.

The first, Ally Tagalile (TZ), was the third prize winner of the Spanish Embassy Visual Art Competition held in December 2016 and co-organized by Nafasi.

The second visiting artist will be Miguel Costales, a Spanish artist who has worked and exhibited regularly in Tanzania since 1999, including on several previous occasions at Nafasi Art Space.

Kijiweni Cinema, Wikiendi Live, & other programmes starting in Feb

We don't have a film screening in January, but don't forget to mark your calendar for 14 February, when we'll have our first screening of the year for Kijiweni Cinema! See www.kijiweniproductions.com for more information.

This year, we will present Wikiendi Live! concerts every other month on the last Saturday of the month, starting on 25 Feb. We're excited to announce that this year, we will be bringing live music acts from around the region and continent, in addition to presenting the top emerging and established acts from right here in Tanzania. Stay tuned for more info.

CHAP CHAP is our open art workshop programme, that invites the public to come to Nafasi to learn about and participate in creating new artwork. The event is facilitated by Nafasi artist members, who choose a topic or art technique to share with the public. Our first CHAP CHAP event of this year will be held in March, so check upcoming newsletters for more information.
PARTNER EVENTS
Maji Maji Flava - Jan 27 & 28 at 7:30pm, National Museum and House of Culture

Maji Maji Flava is a collaboration between Flinn Works (Kassel/Berlin) and Asedeva (Dar es Salaam). The Tanzanian-German team presents performative snapshots of the Maji Maji war and examines neo-colonial dependencies. Maji Maji Flava deals with the magic of water and communication codes, colonial hysteria and how wars can be glorified or swept under the carpet. Durational military operations collide with geopolitical satire; machinegun bullets with shields; and Heia Safari with Bongo Flava.

Please see poster for more information.
