Mambo wapenzi wa sanaa!

Get a wonderful opportunity to have a quick chat and learn from our artists Serge Dakota an installation artist from the DRC and Joan Legalamitlwa a curator from South Africa at our Artist Hangout at Nafasi Art Space on 17th May, from 4-6pm.

Currently residing in Kinshasa, Serge Diakota has had over 8 years’ experience as an installation artist with skills ranging from sculpting, painting and photography. He has exhibited at Young Congo Kin Art Studio in Kinshasa, Congo, Davday by the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, Digital Art Fair Africa in Cape Town, South Africa.

"I translate my vision on objects from everyday life because these objects are witnesses of a human existence and contains a daily experience. In this case plates, capsules, plastic tables etc. ... are my favorite mediums to which I divert their forms and functions by giving them a new discourse and rhythm," he says.

Are you interested in learning about installation art from the artist himself?

Then register for the workshop by emailing info@nafasiartspace.org (deadline to register has been extended to Friday, 18th May).

Mother & Home, exhibition by Nafasi Artist-in-Residence Walter Simbo(TZ) curated by Rebecca Corey and Valerie Amani is still up in the Nafasi gallery until 31 May.

Walter Simbo’s exhibition is a beautiful ode to his beloved mother who passed away when he was a young boy. Simbo’s artwork focuses on the important roles mothers play in shaping us into adulthood. His exhibition is his opportunity to thank his mother and all mothers for the selfless and loving way they take care of their children and the community.

Simbo uses both acrylic and oil paints and sometimes beads on canvas in his work, frequently choosing the color blue which he says “often dominates [his] sight because so many things in the world —the oceans, the seas or even the clouds in the sky —are blue. When [he looks] at the clouds and the sea it reminds [him] of the world that we live in after our mothers birth us.”
