This week's Artist spotlight focuses on our Nafasi artist member Nicholas Calvin.
Nicholas Calvin M. is a freelance photographer based in Dar es Salaam. Through exposure to books about film, photography and fine arts at the local library in his teenage years he became fascinated by the potential of an image to portray universal human stories.
Fine arts is one of the subjects he enjoyed in secondary school. Later he studied heritage management at the University of Dar es Salaam. And then worked in two local museums: in Bagamoyo and Mbeya, before starting working fulltime as a freelance photographer. All this has deepened his appreciation for the history and culture of the region. His photography work seeks to share stories and moments in the region.
With his most famous sayings:
“I am who I am, of which I don’t know much of, or rather each day I am discovering more what I am”
Have a glance at the two photos below to get a short impression of Nicholas' stunning photographs.
You can meet Nicholas and see his beautiful shots in his studio at Nafasi Art Space weekdays 9am-5pm, and Saturday 10am-5pm. Visit Nicholas on all the social medias: flickr, Instagram (Nicholascalv), and facebook. Or email us for more information at info@nafasiartspace.org.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Art Competition - Art and Democracy
In November 2017, Twaweza is convening Democrasia Yetu -- an open dialogue on democracy and civic space in Tanzania. Differing perspectives will be deliberately brought together to challenge each other and try to create space for greater collaboration and cohesion. The event will also serve as a celebration of democratic spaces and freedoms in Tanzania through the arts.
Twaweza and Nafasi Art Space are pleased to announce a Visual Art Competition and Exhibition to coincide with the event. We encourage artists to submit work in any medium (painting, sculpture, photography, video art, and installation) responding to and exploring the theme and topics of the event, which include opening up (transparency versus secrecy), acting together (positive and productive relationships between government and citizens), free exchange (openness to new ideas, constructive critique and unusual partnerships).
Prizes for winning entries will include artist residencies at Nafasi Art Space, and laptops.
Submission requirements: 1. Artist Statement. 2. Artist CV with biographical information, education, and selected exhibitions and awards (1 A4 page). 3. 1-3 High-Res images of artwork in response to theme including artwork details (title, year of production, media and size) by 13 November 2017. 4. Entries must then be delivered in-person to Nafasi Art Space, Mikocheni B, between 13-17 November 2017.
Important: Only submissions in PDF format will be accepted. The PDFs are to be sent by 13 November 2017 to the following e-mail address: asteria@nafasiartspace.org
