‘Food, Markets and Nutrition: Maximizing the Impacts of Private Sector Engagement’

A workshop sponsored by the Institute of Development Studies (in partnership with Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network and DFID)

About the workshop

The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) hosted on Monday, 30 March a workshop for representatives of Tanzanian government, development partners, civil society and the private sector focused on strengthening the impacts of market-based approaches for improving nutrition in Tanzania. The workshop offered participants a deeper understanding of the policy and implementation issues impacting market-based approaches to nutrition and provided an opportunity for them to undertake a market systems analysis, focusing on several real case studies from Tanzania. The results of the workshop were presented to key stakeholders and members of the media and public on Tuesday, 31 March.

Key Messages

·         Under-nutrition is when a person does not have enough energy and nutrients to lead and active and healthy life. It is caused by a complex interaction of factors which include people not consuming enough nutrients from a variety of foods as well as factors such as illness caused by poor sanitation or poor child caring practices.

·         Undernutrition can lead to poor growth in children, called stunting, which effects their height and can also affect brain development. It can a also cause micronutrient deficiencies, also known as " hidden hunger". Many people cannot afford to buy foods that are rich in micro-nutrients.

·         Available evidence from national surveys suggests that under-nutrition has decreased in Tanzania in recent years. However, deficiencies in vitamins and minerals essential for healthy growth and development, continues to affect an unacceptable number of young children in Tanzania.

·         People who suffer from under-nutrition during infancy and childhood can suffer lifelong health consequences.

·         The Government of Tanzania has declared nutrition has to be a national priority. Tanzania was one of the first countries to join the global Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement in 2011.

·         The Government of Tanzania should be commended for its current prioritization of nutrition. It is currently working with development partners and partners in the private sector and civil society, is implementing a number of programs aimed at reducing undernutrition by increasing access to nutrient-rich foods. These include legislation requiring fortification of wheat flour, maize flour and vegetable oil with key micro-nutrients, as well as efforts to integrate nutrition into agricultural policies and programmes.

·         Evidence from other countries, including Nigeria, suggests that national fortification programmes such as Tanzania's face challenges, including achieving effective enforcement of legislation and covering products produced by small-scale businesses.

·         Programmes implemented by Government, development partners, civil society and the private sector in Tanzania offer valuable experience in how to confront these challenges.

·         There is a crucial need to review current experience and undertake systematic analysis in order to identify strategies and actions that can increase access to nutrient-rich foods in Tanzania, and to share lessons in other countries aiming to increase access to nutrient-rich foods in order to reduce levels of under-nutrition.
